Breastfeeding is indeed magical as mother and child get to bond whilst providing the baby all the nutrients that his or her body needs. Nobody however talks about the “bad” sides of breastfeeding such as cracked nipples and swollen, engorged breasts. Sometimes it even feels like your baby is trying to chew your entire nipple off in his effort to get milk.
Thank god you can finally start thinking about feeding your baby solids when he reaches 6 months old. Technically there is no “magic age” at which you have to start introducing solids to your baby. There are many myths out there such as the infamous “your baby looks big enough to eat solid food”. If I had a penny for everyone who said that, I’d be a millionaire by now. What is instead more important is that your baby shows signs that he is physically and mentally ready to begin on solids. Among others, your baby should begin showing more interest during meal times such as grabbing and playing with his food. Baby should also have lost his tongue-thrust autoreflex that he does to push out solid food from his mouth.
Once he begins to show all these signs of readiness, you can begin to supplement breast or formula milk with pureed food. You can puree anything really, however the more popular pureed food items are vegetables and fruits such as suash, apples and bananas. Bananas are my favorite as you simple need to mash them with a fork before feeding them to baby.
